A note from Dr. Brian McCardel

It has been my privilege to work on this project for the last four years with some extraordinary people who dedicated their time to the HIE development process because they believe Health Information Exchange can drastically improve health care outcomes.  The current means of clinical information distribution is inefficient, time-consuming and inadequate. It is said that we have great health care, but a poor system and in no area is that more true than clinical information distribution. Each of the systems has made an effort to provide "clinical portals" that are not integrated with one another. As a result, my staff spends considerable time running down inofrmation before clinical visits, assuming that the right questions have been asked of the patient and we know what we are looking for. Moving all of the clinical information transfer in our community through this system will be the first step in fostering broader efficiencies in the community, including cutting down on the impediments to EMR adoption and facilitating broad adoption of electronic patient care records, in addition to providing powerful tools for public helath syndromic surveillance. Our group has lent its unwavering suport to this project and we hope to work with you to see the GLHIE reach its full potential in our community. I believe the Great Lakes HIE will be a vehicle for enhancing health quality, safey, efficiency and effectiveness in Mid-Michigan, by providing tools for secure digital exchange and authorized access to pertinent patient health information.
